9 Foot Rattle Snake
Jul 27th, 2007 by jasoncalhoun
I received an email from a family member regarding a 9 foot rattle snake found near Medicine Lodge! Shortly afterward, I had an inquirey through this site about the same snake. The question came from a visitor from Florida. I’m fortunate enough to work for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks in the I.T. Section. When I mentioned it to one of my colleagues who happens to be sort of a specialist in that area, he had quite a laugh as I was going to post the picture on the inmedicinelodge.com website. Apparently, that picture has floated around the net and has been tied to several small towns across the US! Nevertheless, there are rattle snakes around Medicine Lodge. The most common is the Prairie Rattler
(left).
As for the Western Diamondback like the one pictured (above) there have been tales about them here in South Central Kansas, but no confirmed sightings.
Find out more about the 9 foot rattler spoof here at snopes.com.
Some very thorough research has also been done here: http://answers.google.com/answers on that topic as well.
If you have a good animal story or perhaps a story or question about something in Medicine Lodge. Use the Contact Us page to tell us about it. If we like it we’ll post it on our website.

I admit, the snake looks rather real… but look how the man is holding it, if that snake is 97 pounds, which they say it is on other websites, there is no way that guy could hold it that far off his body like that. He could probably barely hold it on his shoulder, but he is holding it with ease far off his body… There is NO WAY its REAL!
I was at Maxwell Game preserve and came upon about a 4ft snake that looked just like the one in the picture. I really did think it was some type of rattle snake but it had not rattles????
