It is official news. A mountain lion was shot in Barber County near Medicine Lodge. Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has their official release here. Full article in the Wichita Eagle online can be found here . Basically, both articles state that the person who shot it was cutting wood on his own property when he saw the big cat, went to his truck, grabbed a gun and shot it. He gave information and the pelt to Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks for further investigation of the origin of the mountain lion. There is a suggestion that the mountain lion could be domestic and not wild at all. So what would you do? If you were minding your own business and saw a mountain lion, would you:

Shoot it

Get in your truck and drive away

Call the Game Warden

Try and pet it

Other

Watch the video. Read the article. I think it fits…

This last week I took a look into the Stock Exchange. I thought it might be interesting to see what would happen or could happen if one were to take a minimalist’s approach to the stock market and start trading. I thought I would be as good as anyone at picking solid technology stocks since I’ve been in the industry for the last decade or so. Using Google Finance, I pretended to buy Yahoo, Novell and Redhat all priced at a bargain! Google was well over $500 per share so I I couldn’t afford even one share. Well, as luck would have it, the market took a tumble hours after I set up my virtual purchases. That afternoon a news release was made that affected everyone. One of the nations top mortgage lenders, American Home Mortgage Investment Corp., was having troubles producing money to back the loans they made and since their market is residential home loans there wasn’t anyone on Wall Street that wanted to bail them out. From what I’m reading, they can’t pay dividends owed to shareholders, and their shares are worthless, so that put the whole market in a downward spin. Some stocks have recovered and others are still moving back up slowly. Of course had I purchased after that event I would have hit one of the biggest stock market sales of the year.

I invited some other colleagues to play my little game. The rules are simple, start with 500 (virtual) bucks, invest in what you want and your virtual fees are 7 dollars per trade. One guy who got in, put all his money into Sprint. Another searched for the stock that had the biggest loss, and was dirt cheap and made sure it was indeed a reputable company and bought a bunch of it. The company was Salton. They hold brand names such as George Foreman™, Toastmaster®, Breadman®, Juiceman®, Westinghouse®, Farberware®, Melitta®, Russell Hobbs®, Tower®, and Haden®. They even sell a Rachael Ray Blender! My friend bought the Salton stock at 40 cents a share. Thats like over a thousand shares! What a deal, right? Time will tell. They had some real bad timing. In addition to being victim of a shaky market, they had merger go bad just days before. Well, today the Salton stock shot up to 69 cents a share. If he would have sold he could have made somewhere over $300 on a $500 dollar investment… Not bad for a day!

I got to thinking about his logic, and applied it to another search. I found that Chiquita, the banana company, had a major loss. I’m thinking well heck, There’s a no-brainer. What could be wrong with that? It’s everyone’s favorite banana right? As it turns out, the Cincinnati based company’s stock plunged after they admitted to the Federal Dept. of Justice that they were paying over a million out to Columbian terror groups for protection of farm land. Now they are being taken to court buy the federal government. Maybe I should stick with Apple.

“Yes, we have no bananas today.”

Shortly afterward, I had an inquirey through this site about the same snake. The question came from a visitor from Florida. I’m fortunate enough to work for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks in the I.T. Section. When I mentioned it to one of my colleagues who happens to be sort of a specialist in that area, he had quite a laugh as I was going to post the picture on the inmedicinelodge.com website. Apparently, that picture has floated around the net and has been tied to several small towns across the US! Nevertheless, there are rattle snakes around Medicine Lodge. The most common is the Prairie Rattler (left).
As for the Western Diamondback like the one pictured (above) there have been tales about them here in South Central Kansas, but no confirmed sightings.

Find out more about the 9 foot rattler spoof here at snopes.com.

Some very thorough research has also been done here: http://answers.google.com/answers on that topic as well.

If you have a good animal story or perhaps a story or question about something in Medicine Lodge. Use the Contact Us page to tell us about it. If we like it we’ll post it on our website.

What can I say? It rained. But that’s the way it has been here this year. The day started out nice and warm, humid as usual and sort of peculiar feeling. There were fireworks to be purchased at the usual local stands and hot dogs of all kinds to be eaten everywhere. Country Music Celebrity, Martina McBride, made a special trip to her home town of Sharon to dedicate the park, and celebrate the Forth. I drove by the park with my family, earlier in the day to catch a glimpse of her big red tour bus and her brother Marty, and Father, Darryl. The rain was still on its way and rumor was that it was kinda hard but lasted for only 20 minutes. Personally, I would have liked to see Martina, and Marty playing in the park, and we actually received an invitation, but my kids were getting kind of excited about shooting off fireworks, and I really was hoping that they would have a good memory for this year.

On we went back to the Lodge, to get some fireworks and get ready for the big “Freedom Bash 2007″ going on at the First Assembly of God church. There was exceptional live music performed by Blake Arron, big inflated slides, and amusements and of course hot dogs, free Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and other pop too. Everything was free, and never once did they ask anything of anyone except that they enjoy themselves. I’d say there were a few hundred people there while I was there. I’ll try to get some more details later. Just minutes before the rain, sound equipment and instruments were hauled into the church sanctuary. We listened to some live music, and even won a couple of door prizes! After that, it was back outside into the drizzle. But not by force, of course. The inflatable amusements were wet, slick and becoming very popular. As for myself, I just knew that wet slippery plastic would probably lead to a broken arm or something so, I chickened out. I had a good time watching everyone else though. All and all I thought it was a good Independence Day. My kids, said that it was the best ever.

As of the moment the medicineldoge.indexkansas.com site is off line. There were some issues with the load on the server and so all but paying sites are off line. I totally understand the host providers reasoning. The inMedicineLodge.com site wasn’t doing much for the town or the state. Perhaps, because I wasn’t doing much either. Nevertheless, the site was doing something for a few people and that’s good enough for me. It provided a way for both my wife’s family and mine to see and hear what was going on in our lives and in our environment. Occasionally, someone from our town or elsewhere found the site and spent some time there as well*. Perhaps someone far from home found it comforting to see pictures and videos about their old stomping grounds… I’ll never really know. That was a part of the initial intent.

I determined that since Medicine Lodge only has a few contributers and a handful of regular visitors and no paying sponsors, that it really doesn’t need to take up space and resources on a system for high volume paying customers. I greatly appreciate all the effort that has taken place to do something worth while for our town.

I have decided to continue the inMedicineLodge.com site on another shared host. I have chosen the new WordPress as the platform. It seems to have everything that is needed to post, organize and syndicate different kinds of content. Currently, it supports multi-users with roles and policies and can be expanded with “plug-ins”. There’s a bunch out there for everything from photo galleries, to e-commerce.

Well, thats all for now. I’ll be posting some of the old content from medicinelodge.indexkansas.com when/if it returns back online. If your interested, you can check out the new beginnings at http://www.inMedicineLodge.com

P.S. If you have a site send me a link so I can add a link to it on mine.

your friend,

*Statistics gathered by Google Analytics showed visitors from as far away as Europe and Alaska.
